Notes for Oda von Werl
Oda of Werl (born around 1047 and died on January 13, 1110) was a noblewoman from the House of the Counts of Werl.

Her mother was Richenza of Swabia and her father was Count Hermann III of Werl. Her stepfather was Otto of Northeim. She married Lothar Udo II, Count of Stade (who died on May 4, 1082), and Margrave of the North March. She is considered the ancestress of the Counts of Stade. Her sons Henry, Udo III and Rudolf successively became Margraves of the North March. Her daughter Adelheid of Stade (born around 1060 and died in 1110) became Countess of Goseck and Countess in Thuringia.

Around 1110, the heirs of Oda gave part of their Werl inheritance, a third of the Lürwald, to the Archbishops of Cologne. This followed the other two thirds given to the heirs of Henry the Fat, Margrave of Friesland (who died in 1101), and Kuno of Northeim, Count of Beichlingen (who died in 1103).
Notes for Lothar Udo II (Spouse 1)
Lothar Udo was likely the sole son of Count Lothar Udo I of Stade, Margrave of the Nordmark (Northern March) from the House of Udo and Adelheid of Rheinfelden, sister of Count Kuno. Initially, the Counts of Stade’s territory stretched along the lower Elbe River around Harsefeld and Stade. However, a marriage in the early 11th century granted them estates and rights in eastern Saxony. In 1044 William, son of Count Bernhard II of Haldensleben, succeeded as Margrave of the Nordmark. The Saxon army suffered a decisive defeat at the Battle of Pritzlawa near Werben on the Elbe in 1056 at the hands of the Slavic Liutizi. William perished in the battle and Emperor Henry III subsequently enfeoffed Lothar Udo I, son of Count Siegfried II of Stade, with the Nordmark. This imperial fief in the Saxon North March solidified the Udo family’s influence in the region. Following his father’s death in 1057, Lothar Udo II ascended to the position of Margrave of the North March.

Lothair Udo II, Margrave of the Nordmark from 1057 until his death, also held the title of Count of Stade (Lothair Udo III). He was the sole son of Lothair Udo I of the Udonids and Adelaide of Rheinfelden.

His family’s power base was centred around
Harsefeld and Stade. However, through strategic marriages, they gained control over almost the entire eastern third of the Duchy of Saxony, encompassing lands and rights.

The Margrave of the Nordmark (Northern March) served as a high-ranking military governor within the Holy Roman Empire. Their primary responsibility was to defend the northeastern frontier of the Duchy of Saxony against Slavic tribes, particularly those east of the Elbe River. Established around 965 following the death of Gero I, this frontier mark was initially governed by Dietrich of Haldensleben until the 983 Slavic uprising.
