Note by Paul Marks:
Huguenot Descent: Stan understands and told me August 2010 that the Marks family descended from Huguenots who came from France to England as a result of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The name was anglicised from Marques to Marks. Presumably there would only have been 2 or 3 generations from the immigrant Marques to Thomas William Marks.
The Edict of Fontainebleau (October 1685) was an edict issued by Louis XIV of France, also known as the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes of 1598, which had granted to the Huguenots the right to practice their religion without persecution from the state.
